Being the greatest among family members and social circles was the big thing in ancient cultures. People tried to build reputations—to be the best. One could earn tremendous respect and social privilege by being named the greatest.
Surrounded by such social and cultural reputations, the disciples of Jesus were dreaming of and building that ambition. As recorded in today’s Gospel, the disciples were arguing about who was the greatest among the group. For Jesus, that was a silly question.
